What is a breast nodule

Family history has little to do with it, of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of it. Your age is the biggest risk factor and at your age it is not likely as of breast cancers are diagnosed in postmenopausal women. It is common to have lumps in the breast and it is important to always have prior mammograms available for comparison. The vast majority of breast lumps are not cancerous and are referred to as benign.

Both men and women at any age can have a breast nodule. It is important to recognize the difference between healthy and unhealthy breast tissue.

Last week I had a breast sonogram done, and the showed benign nodules, eight altogether. The terms nodule or mass are often used to mean the same thing, and refer to an abnormality seen on mammogram or ultrasound. When a mass or nodule is able to be felt, this is called a palpable mass or nodule. A common term for a palpable mass is lump.

Normal breast tissue sometimes feels lumpy. Not all masses or nodules are able to be felt. What is a screening mammogram?

When a mammogram is viewe breast tissue appears white and opaque (cloudy), and fatty tissue appears darker and translucent.

If a solid breast nodule appears on ultrasound to be ‘taller-than-wide‘, this is suspicious of malignancy. During a screening mammogram, the breast is X-rayed in two different positions: from top to bottom and from side to side. The textbook may say: when a patient is scanned by ultrasoun they are usually in a supine position, and as a result the normal ’tissue planes’ on the breast will have a horizontal orientation.

Benign (non-cancerous) breast conditions are very common, and most women have them. In fact, most breast changes are benign. Unlike breast cancers, benign breast conditions are not life-threatening. But some are linked with a higher risk of getting breast cancer later on.

If cancer is the cause of a breast nodule , patients should discuss treatment options with their doctors, as the best approach may include surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation, or a combination of treatments. Some of the common types of breast nodules are cysts. Breast Lumps: Myths and Facts.

Before a breast MRI, a dye might be injected through an intravenous (IV) line in your arm to enhance the appearance of tissues or blood vessels on the MRI pictures. You might be surprised to find a breast lump, but it’s important to remember that it may not affect your long-term health. Some are not found until a physical or imaging exam.

Your doctor will likely perform a physical exam to evaluate a breast lump. A breast lump is a mass that develops in the breast. There are likely to be other possible causes, so ask your doctor about your symptoms.

Several breast lumps are not cancer, but are strongly associated with an increased risk of cancer. Others are pre-cancerous growths, and the cells can transform, becoming cancer cells in the future. While most benign breast lumps are either left alone or removed for comfort, pre-cancerous lumps must be removed.
