Black butte xxiii

Our 27th Anniversary Imperial Porter was brewed with Theo Chocolate’s cocoa nibs, pomegranate molasses and select spices, blended with apricot puree, and then aged in bourbon barrels. Every year, we celebrate our anniversary with an imperial, barrel-aged version of our flagship Black Butte Porter. Our brewers love to experiment and they always add some fun new ingredients to this beer like chilies, cranberries, figs and other such treats. A major thanks and shout out to Edgar Chavez for making this vertical tasting possible.


Pours black with light head.

Aromas of dark caramel, vanilla, and chocolate malts. Flavors of dark maple sugar, caramel, chicory, rich nutty chocolate and dry. The beer, which is aged in bourbon barrels for six months, contains 10. The aroma is a tease, but the true show starts when the beer hits.


It’s surprisingly smooth and soft for a beer so big. I detect very light roasted notes, like a chocolate ball dusted with coffee, but it smells unendingly creamy, like a soft serve chocolate ice cream. My personal feeling is a year is right about perfect, but I have had a few of those high gravity barrel aged beers that have been a couple of years old and they have tasted fine.


Black Butte XXIII is a demonstration of how a specialty, pumped-up beer can still be a restrained beer.

They will definitely change flavor as they age, but will not become overly oxidized for at least a couple of years. Based off of their flagship beer – Black Butte Porter, each year this celebratory ale is just a little different each time. It’s odd to think of how many times over the years I’ve had Black Butte Porter and yet I’ve never written a review for it. The time has come to remedy this problem.


It is available year-round and has a 5. The hop profile suggests a civilized bitterness without the bite. Black Butte is well-preserved due to a lack of glaciation east of the major Cascade arc. This festival has become very popular among brewers, thanks I think to both its uniqueness and its laid back atmosphere.
